Computing

I’ve been playing (and sometimes working) with computers since 1982 when my parents bought a second-hand TRS-80 Model 1 (with expansion pack) for home use, and shortly after my father purchased a Bondwell 14 CPM computer for work use. The Bondwell even had a voice synth, which was almost recognisable :-) My introduction to wordprocessing and spreadsheets was with this machine, using Wordstar and Calcstar. I don’t remember much of Calcstar, but the ^X, ^C and ^V key combinations are still used most days.

We progressed to the Sega SC-3000 and then to the mighty Commodore 64. Moving to colour was a big improvement, especially for the games!

The first computer I owned (rather than my parents owning) was a Panasonic CF-150B laptop. Unlike a lot of luggables, this really was a laptop and only weighed a couple of kg. Its battery was a 6V lead-acid gell cell, and the backlight was strong enough to light up a room! This computer had a single 720kB floppy, but DOS was in ROM so booting was almost instant.

After various desktop machines over about 13 years (286 16MHz, 386SX 16MHz, 386DX 40MHz, Pentium MMX 166MHz, Celeron 700MHz, Celeron 1300MHz) I went back to a laptop. This was the Sony VGN-S38GP/B, which is still a nice machine (although it has a very noisy CPU fan and short battery life). This computer looks like it is brand new, and it is running Windows 7 Beta very nicely. It certainly helps that it has an nVidia GeForce Go 6200 video card onboard.

My current notebook computer is the Fujitsu P1620. This computer has its own page, so more details are there.
