Professional
The hobby pages, photo gallery and blog postings are the main reason for having this website. These pages however provide some background to my professional/work background. Who knows, you may be able to assist me and I might be able to assist you. If you would like to get in touch, please you my contact details on the home page. Just in-case you’re wondering — I am not prepared to relocate away from Brisbane, so please don’t ask.
Key Strengths
I am an Electrical & Electronic Engineer with experience in transmission planning, power systems testing, condition monitoring, electricity markets, strategic planning and product design. I am particularly interested in advanced instrumentation and systems for monitoring power system performance. I provide innovative solutions that often bring two or more areas of expertise together, and am willing to challenge the status-quo.
Examples of where I have been innovative and introduced new ways of doing things are:
- The first PVr based design of Power System Stabiliser (PSS) settings at Powerlink Queensland.
- Verification of turbo-generator performance comparing recorded measurements fed into a simulation model with observed results.
- Adoption of automotive instrumentation for power systems testing, reducing the weight of test equipment from over 100 kg to 8 kg.
- Adaptation of existing instrumentation systems to allow the System Operator to monitor tests results from their office during commissioning of the Queensland New South Wales Interconnector (QNI), increasing the flexibility of the commissioning schedule.
- Introduction of surface mount technology (SMT) to condition monitoring products to improve reliability and to enhance resistance to electromagnetic interference.
- Use of GIS spatial analysis techniques to calculate load transfers for distribution network area planning.
- Creation of mapping systems to show distribution and sub-transmission network outages graphically in real-time.
