Power System Analysis and Planning
- Load Flow, Fault Calculation and Transient Stability Studies of sub-transmission and transmission systems using PSS/E.
- Dynamic Stability Studies and Power System Stabliser designs for turbo-generators using MUDPACK.
- Power Quality analysis using Matlab.
- Project planning, options analysis and approval report preparation for sub-transmission network augmentations.
- Development of business cases and financial modelling for large transmission augmentations (Regulatory Test).
Power System Testing
- Design of test equipment, wiring plans, test plans and liaison with site owners for performance verification of generator excitation systems (AVR and PSS) and SVC control systems.
- Power Quality testing – equipment setup and interfacing with existing control panels.
- Operation of high speed recording systems (specific instruments and LabView based data acquisition systems) for generator tests.
- On-site analysis of test results to confirm machine behaviour meets regulatory requirements.
- Development of instruments and monitoring systems to allow real-time remote access to test results.
- Commissioning of condition monitoring equipment in high voltage (220 kV, 275 kV and 330 kV) substations, as well as on high voltage transmission lines.
Electronics Design
- Design of electronic instrumentation to monitor the condition of Oil & Paper insulated bushings and to monitor surface pollution levels on transmission line insulators.
- Design of analogue & digital electronics and DSP software for a power quality meter (harmonics, voltage flicker and sag/swell).
- Development of control and monitoring software for condition monitoring systems.
- Analogue and digital design, schematic capture and printed circuit board layout using the Protel suite. Particular emphasis for design of electronics for harsh substation conditions.
- Systems design and specification of new products.
Geographic Information Systems
- Spatial analysis for electricity network planning studies using ESRI ArcGIS Desktop. Use GIS tools to answer engineering questions.
- Cartography to support network studies, and for field use by volunteer State Emergency Service members.
Computing
- Well versed with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Visio, Corel Draw and image editing software.
- Experience operating local area networks, servers, printer and general office IT.
- Knowledge of specialist engineering and analytical applications such as Matlab, Simulink, Mathcad, Protel and LabView.
- Programming experience with C (DSP and PC), Pascal, Visual Basic and Python.
- Knowledge of various layer level networking protocols, including Ethernet, TCP/IP (inc. VPN), Modbus and AX.25.
- Extensive experience with serial communications using RS232, RS485, fibre optics and GSM data.
